Polenastics España, Studio Opening Day

It's the moment you've all been waiting for!!!

As you all know it's been a rough few months from rogue builders to water leaks and new floors but we have finally done it and the new pole dance studio is ready and waiting to go.

Earthquakes

In view of what happened in Lorca yesterday and as we are in an active earthquake area, thought the following advice might be useful (fingers crossed we never need it!)..

What to Do During an Earthquake

Stay as safe as possible during an earthquake. Be aware that some earthquakes are actually foreshocks and a larger earthquake might occur. Minimize your movements to a few steps to a nearby safe place and if you are indoors, stay there until the shaking has stopped and you are sure exiting is safe.

If indoors

DROP to the ground; take COVER by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and HOLD ON until the shaking stops. If there isn’t a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building.
Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures or furniture.
Stay in bed if you are there when the earthquake strikes. Hold on and protect your head with a pillow, unless you are under a heavy light fixture that could fall. In that case, move to the nearest safe place.
Use a doorway for shelter only if it is in close proximity to you and if you know it is a strongly supported, loadbearing doorway.
Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries occur when people inside buildings attempt to move to a different location inside the building or try to leave.
Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler systems or fire alarms may turn on.
DO NOT use the elevators.

If outdoors

Stay there.
Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires.
Once in the open, stay there until the shaking stops. The greatest danger exists directly outside buildings, at exits and alongside exterior walls. Many of the 120 fatalities from the 1933 Long Beach earthquake occurred when people ran outside of buildings only to be killed by falling debris from collapsing walls. Ground movement during an earthquake is seldom the direct cause of death or injury. Most earthquake-related casualties result from collapsing walls, flying glass, and falling objects.

If in a moving vehicle

Stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires.
Proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped. Avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that might have been damaged by the earthquake.

If trapped under debris

Do not light a match.
Do not move about or kick up dust.
Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.
Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you. Use a whistle if one is available. Shout only as a last resort. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust.


My thoughts go out to everyone affected by this tragic event. And great advice too, just hope we never need it!

According to a team leader responsible for rescuing people after an earthquake you should never take shelter under a table or a doorway. Most fatalities occur where people have done this. They end up being crushed to death as the table collapses under the weight of debris, and there is less space than the bone mass of the body. His advice is to get outside, but if you can`t then take shelter between tables etc, not under them. When the rubble falls you won't be so likely to be crushed to death as there will be enough room for your body.

Most of the advice on the internet seems to advocate Drop, Cover & Hold. It also says NOT to go outside until the shaking stops as many fatalities are caused by falling debris.

In MOST situations, you will reduce your chance of injury if you:

DROP down onto your hands and knees (before the earthquakes knocks you down). This position protects you from falling but allows you to still move if necessary.
COVER your head and neck (and your entire body if possible) under a sturdy table or desk. If there is no shelter nearby, only then should you get down near an interior wall (or next to low-lying furniture that won't fall on you), and cover your head and neck with your arms and hands.
HOLD ON to your shelter (or to your head and neck) until the shaking stops. Be prepared to move with your shelter if the shaking shifts it around.

The main goal of "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" is to protect you from falling and flying debris and other nonstructural hazards, and to increase the chance of your ending up in a Survivable Void Space if the building actually collapses. The space under a sturdy table or desk is likely to remain even if the building collapses- pictures from around the world show tables and desks standing with rubble all around them, and even holding up floors that have collapsed.

DO NOT run outside or to other rooms during shaking

DO NOT stand in a doorway

So conflicting adviceon some of the points it seems....

Butcher

Has anybody used either the Dutch Butcher (in Benimar) or Reeves (the new one on the main street)? I usually use The Chop Shop in Quesada but with 2 more on my doorstep feel that I should try and give them my trade. Has anyone any good or bad experiences of either of them?

Wok Buffet, Benimar

We had a lovely meal last night at the Wok Buffet in Benimar. Now Im not normally a fan of Woks as I find them all a bit the same and I dont like queuing for my food! This one however has not only the food cooked on the wok but also a selection of meals already prepared as well as a great choice of starters and desserts. And best of all it was only €6.95 which I think is a bargain. We have been to the new one, Wok Royale, on the Quesada road and that was €12.95 and was not a patch on this one. The staff in Benimar were friendly and made the effort to talk to you. Will return again.

Benijofar

We have been to the one in Benimar also and I agree it is one of the better ones. The one near to Mercadona was rubbish when we went and definitely NOT worth the money.

I believe there is a new Consum supermarket opening in Benijofar / Rojales area. Does anyone know if it is open yet and whereabouts it is? Thanks

I believe it opens on Thursday but not sure what time at. It is situated behind the BP garage on the road from Benimar to Rojales. There is also a new Aldi there which is very good and a Chinese Bazaar.

It opened today (and was very busy) - if you spend over €50 you get a free shopping trolley and there were plenty of people walking away with them!! Dont think that offer will last long! They had lots of products on special offer at only €1.
